The US Department of Energy is offering to loan up to 40 million barrels of crude from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve. The move completes the US share of a March coordinated release agreement with roughly 30 IEA member countries that followed the outbreak of war on Iran. SPR inventories have already fallen below 284 million barrels, the lowest level since 1982.

Bull vs bear

Bullish: tighter physical supply in an already depleted SPR could support crude prices and risk assets if the loan is quickly absorbed by the market. Bearish: another large SPR release signals policymakers are willing to flood the market with barrels to cap energy costs, weighing on oil and by extension on crypto risk sentiment.
